‘Surprise of the Year’ for the Ultimate Emirates and Airbus A380 fan

Emirates and Airbus teamed up to search for the ultimate A380 fan in the UAE ahead of the Dubai Airshow in November. A Facebook competition, jointly organised by Emirates and Airbus, garnered over 1,000 entries in less than three days. To enter, participants had to express why they were ardent fans of the Emirates A380, in less than 380 words.

The winner, Yves Heye, became the envy of aviation enthusiasts when he was treated to a special VIP tour of the Emirates’ first two-class configured A380, which was unveiled at the Dubai Airshow.

Yves Heye’s winning streak did not end there. His tour concluded with the ‘Surprise of the Year’ when he was invited to visit Toulouse, France, for an exclusive tour of the A380 manufacturing facility. The ‘Ultimate A380 Fan’ flew to France in December on an Emirates A380 where he witnessed the A380 Final Assembly Line with an Emirates A380 currently under production.

He also visited the A380 mock-up cabin centre and other Airbus facilities. His dream trip concluded with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly an A380 from Toulouse to Marseille under the command of an Airbus test pilot in a true-to-life flight simulator.

The Emirates A380

The Emirates A380 has flown over 47 million passengers, covering over 700 million kilometres. There are currently 36 A380 destinations on the Emirates network and the airline continues to be at the forefront of A380 deployment with 72 A380 aircraft in operation and 68 more A380 aircraft to be delivered. Birmingham (from 27 March 2016), Prague and Taipei (both from 1 May 2016) will soon join the growing list of Emirates A380 destinations, making Emirates the first and only airline to operate a scheduled A380 service from each of these destinations.

Emirates Anticipates Another Peak Travel Week

Travel is expected to reach an all-time high at the end of this week for Emirates, as the airline expects yet another busy period with visitors flocking into Dubai for New Year’s celebrations and the upcoming Dubai Shopping Festival.

Excluding transit passengers, over 174,000 people are expected to arrive into Dubai from 28 December until just after New Year’s Day. In addition, more than 103,000 travellers will be making their way to Emirates dedicated Terminal 3 facilities in just the three days between 2 – 4 January 2016, to depart Dubai.

The busiest day to the start of 2016 is expected to be on Saturday 2 January.

Mohammed H. Mattar, Divisional Senior Vice President, Emirates Airport Services said: “With another record breaking week coming up, we want to ensure that passing through the airport is as stress-free as possible. During the upcoming busy travel period, passengers should provide plenty of time for airport check-in and security screening, and factor in more time into their travel plans to ensure they arrive to their gates on time.”

Emirates reminds customers to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before their flight departs, and factor in extra time to arrive to the airport in case they experience heavy road traffic heading to Terminal 3. Check-in counters open 6 hours before departure however passengers can check-in from 24 hours to 6 hours before departure at the car park check-in area. All passengers must be present at the time of check-in. Customers are also urged to check-in online and then use the convenient baggage drop facilities to expedite their airport experience. Those checking in online are required to check in their luggage no later than 90 minutes prior to departure. Customers holding an e-boarding pass and travelling with carry-on bags only, can proceed directly to passport control and security clearance.

Customers who check-in less than 60 minutes to their scheduled flight departure will not be accepted. These time checks will ensure the minimization of delays and missed connections.

For families, Emirates has designated special areas for families consisting of 10 economy check-in counters in Terminal 3 at Area 2, which are designed with their needs in mind. Additionally, special stroller services both upon departure and arrival enable parents access to prams when heading to their gate and immediately upon leaving the aircraft. Families travelling on Emirates can also enjoy priority boarding to ensure a seamless experience all the way to departure. In the Emirates Dubai lounges, special children’s play and entertainment areas with arcade quality games ensure that they are entertained even before boarding their Emirates flight.

Passengers are also urged to check the permitted list of carry-on and checked-in items for safe travel this holiday season. Spare lithium batteries used for electronic devices such as cameras, mobiles phones and laptops as well as hoverboards are restricted from checked-in baggage. Passengers also need to make sure that liquids, gels and aerosols, pastes, lotions, creams, drinks and other items must be in containers with a capacity not exceeding 100ml in carry-on baggage.

Customers travelling to the United States, Canada and the UK are reminded to charge their electronic devices before arriving at the airport, as they will be required to switch on these devices on at the relevant boarding gates where screenings will take place, or risk being denied access to fly.

Key time checks for Emirates passengers:

  • Emirates check-in counters are open 6 hours before flight departure
  • Car park check-in is available from 24 hours to 6 hours before departure
  • Check in no later than 90 minutes prior to departure, regardless of class of travel
  • Customers who have checked in online are also required to check in their luggage 90 minutes before flight departure
  • Customers are advised to go through security checks no later than 60 minutes before flight departure
  • Boarding on all flights begins 45 minutes prior to departure, and gates in all concourses close 20 minutes prior to departure

Furthermore, BMW ConnectedDrive car owners can also have remote access to their vehicle via the BMW Call Centre or the My BMW Remote App. With it, car owners can use the Concierge Services independently on their mobile phone at home or abroad, around the clock, seven days per week and without incurring any additional costs.

Other uses of My BMW Remote App include being able to lock or unlock one’s BMW by smartphone from wherever if the owner happens to be unsure whether he or she locked the car after getting out. Or, instead of using the My BMW Remote App, drivers can call the BMW Call Centre wherein, after callers have identified themselves as the owner, the Call Centre agent activates the Remote Services and unlocks or locks the vehicle.

Another feature of the My BMW Remote App is that within the ‘Climate’ menu, a BMW car owner can turn on the auxiliary heatingor auxiliary ventilation. The App also allows drivers to sound the horn and flash the lights in order to find the vehicle in a large car park. And, with the assistance of a Vehicle Finder, it shows the car’s current position on a map on a smartphone.

As an added convenience for those who may often change their mobile phones to a new one, the My BMW Remote App can be download on the App Store or on Google Play™. However, before one can avail of any Remote Services, it must be activated in the BMW ConnectedDrive customer portal (incl. security question for use via the Call Centre).
