{"id":21218,"date":"2019-07-15T14:12:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T10:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/?p=21218"},"modified":"2019-07-15T14:12:48","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T10:12:48","slug":"the-middle-easts-largest-airport-solar-energy-system-is-ready-at-dxb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/the-middle-easts-largest-airport-solar-energy-system-is-ready-at-dxb\/","title":{"rendered":"The Middle East&#8217;s Largest Airport Solar Energy System Is Ready At DXB"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Dubai_Airports_Company-1005477\/\">Dubai Airports<\/a>, operator of the world\u2019s busiest international airport, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Etihad_Airways_PJSC-1001810\/\">Etihad<\/a>\u00a0Energy Services Company (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Etihad_Airways_PJSC-1001810\/\">Etihad<\/a>\u00a0ESCO), a leading energy service company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of\u00a0<a class=\"_magnetEntNameitent_191-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/in-the-news\/Dubai%20Electricity\/2479431830\/\">Dubai Electricity<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Dubai_Electricity__Water_Authority-540877\/\">Water Authority<\/a>\u00a0(DEWA), have announced the successful installation of a solar energy system comprising 15,000 photovoltaic panels at\u00a0<a class=\"_magnetEntNameitent_191-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/in-the-news\/Dubai%20International\/4236220727\/\">Dubai International<\/a>\u2019s Terminal 2 \u2013 the largest at any airport in the region.<\/p>\n<p>With a capacity of 5MWp, the solar project will generate 7,483,500 kWh energy annually for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Dubai_Airports_Company-1005477\/\">Dubai Airports<\/a>, resulting in savings worth AED 3.3 million. The project will reduce existing Terminal 2 load by approximately 29%, while also slashing annual CO2 emissions by 3,243 metric tonnes, which is equivalent to 53,617 tree seedlings grown for 10 years or 688 passenger vehicles driven for one year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The project is part of\u00a0<em>Shams Dubai<\/em>, DEWA\u2019s first smart initiative that aims to promote the use of clean renewable energy sources. The programme encourages installation of solar panels on rooftops to generate electricity from solar power and connecting it to DEWA\u2019s grid to transfer surplus generation.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Etihad_Airways_PJSC-1001810\/\">Etihad<\/a>\u00a0ESCO will provide maintenance services for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/company\/Dubai_Airports_Company-1005477\/\">Dubai Airports<\/a>\u00a0for a period of seven years from completion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Michael Ibbitson, Executive Vice President, Infrastructure and Technology, Dubai Airports, said: \u201cDubai Airports has undertaken a variety of green initiatives over the past several years to limit our carbon footprint and support Dubai\u2019s goal for a 30% reduction in the city\u2019s energy consumption by 2030. These include the use of energy efficient fittings, the optimisation of cooling systems, the installation of energy efficient LED bulbs and many others. In addition to enabling us to limit ourcarbon footprint while cutting costs, these initiatives also support our long-term vision for a carbon neutral future in line with the aviation industry\u2019s target. We look forward to working on more energy efficiency initiatives with\u00a0<a class=\"_magnetEntNameitent_191-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/in-the-news\/Etihad\/119730\/\">Etihad<\/a>\u00a0ESCO in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_magnetEntNameitent_191-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/in-the-news\/Ali%20Al%20Jassim\/2706039105\/\">Ali Al Jassim<\/a>, CEO, Etihad ESCO, said: \u201cOur partnership with Dubai Airports for the installation of photovoltaic solar panels gives us an opportunity to play a role in Dubai Airports\u2019 vision for energy efficiency and development. Furthermore, this also marks an extension of an existing partnership between Dubai Airports and Etihad ESCO, which goes back to October 2017 when we signed an agreement for the retrofitting of\u00a0<a class=\"_magnetEntNameitent_191-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/in-the-news\/DXB\/137134\/\">DXB<\/a>\u2019s Terminals 1, 2 and 3 to enhance energy efficiency and cut down water and electricity consumption by 20 per cent. This once again underscores the role of joint efforts in achieving Dubai\u2019s sustainability goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you all know, the Shams Dubai initiative supports the vision of His Highness\u00a0<a class=\"_magnetEntNameitent_191-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/uae\/en\/in-the-news\/Sheikh%20Mohammed%20Bin%20Rashid%20Al%20Maktoum\/3099212175\/\">Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum<\/a>, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make Dubai one of the smartest cities in the world.
