{"id":36535,"date":"2021-03-10T14:32:23","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T10:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/?p=36535"},"modified":"2021-03-10T14:32:23","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T10:32:23","slug":"defending-champion-simmonds-and-swiss-legend-ryf-set-to-battle-for-ironman-70-3-dubai-womens-crown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/defending-champion-simmonds-and-swiss-legend-ryf-set-to-battle-for-ironman-70-3-dubai-womens-crown\/","title":{"rendered":"Defending Champion Simmonds And Swiss Legend Ryf Set To Battle For IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai Women&#8217;s Crown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"en-AE\">Imogen Simmonds<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the 2020 women&#8217;s champion, will be back in Dubai this weekend, hoping to defend her IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai crown alongside a stacked field that also includes two-time Dubai women&#8217;s champion and Swiss legend\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Daniela Ryf<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">More than 1,400 have registered to take part for this year&#8217;s IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai, including nearly 100 elite professionals, and the race will again take place in the famed Jumeirah district, around\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Burj Al Arab<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">the stunning seven-star hotel that has hosted celebrities from all over the world<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Supported by Dubai Sports Council and organized under the slogan &#8220;Anything is Possible&#8221;,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0is billed as a race that\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">bridges the exotic with the luxurious<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, and \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">fast<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">flat\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2013 it also a\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">gateway to brand new personal best time<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Additionally, this year&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0will offer\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">50 qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2021<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, which will take place on September 17-18\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">in St. George, Utah<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, United States. Plus, there will be an additional 25\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">qualifying slots exclusively for female athletes from the Women For Tri Initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Winner of the bronze medal at the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Simmonds<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, who has an MSc in Environmental Technology and Business from the Imperial College of London, was a heavy pre-race favourite in Dubai 12 months ago and, true to predictions, she crossed the line ahead of United States&#8217; Danielle Dingman with a significant lead of almost seven minutes, while Pamella Oliveira of Brazil was third.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai you sure did surprise me,&#8221; Simmonds wrote on her Facebook page after the win. &#8220;Amazing crowds and atmosphere along the whole course, thank you to all those cheering and supporting us crazy athletes!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Simmonds will again start as favourite, but her compatriot\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Daniela Ryf<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0&#8211; winner of the Dubai women&#8217;s title in\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">2016<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">2017<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, as well as five IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship titles (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and four IRONMAN World Championship (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) could make a triumphant return to competition in Dubai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Ryf, who has not competed since the Kona Ironman in October 2019, has been training for her return in St. Moritz and now feels ready for Dubai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;Over the past few months, I have been training a lot and with high intensity,&#8221; said Ryf. &#8220;But I can&#8217;t judge my form just yet. That&#8217;s why the opportunity to compete again will not only be very welcome, but useful as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;The fact that my next start in Dubai is now imminent, makes me very happy. The course is flat, the race attractive and the organizers are simply fantastic.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">On the men&#8217;s side, Belgian\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Pieter Heemeryck<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, who was second behind compatriot Bart Aernouts in 2020, will be hoping to go one better this year, while Swiss ace\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Ruedi Wild<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, who finished third on his two previous appearances in Dubai in 2017 and 2018, is excited about his prospects as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Finally back to racing,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0Wild<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">wrote on his Facebook page last week.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">One more week to go till IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai. Great memories from the past and finishing on the podium in both my attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">Skiing always seemed to work well as preparation, so let<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8216;<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">s hope it still is. Greatful and appreciate more than ever to have racing opportunities these days.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">THE COURSE<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-AE\">The one-loop 1.9<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">km<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0(1.2 mile) swim course is set to the backdrop of the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, with a<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">thletes start<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0their swim next to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and finish<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0at Jumeirah Publich Beach before they run into transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-AE\">The one-loop 90 km (56 mile) bike course leads athletes through the city before they leave the city limits behind and venture out and into the Araban Dunes. This is considered one of the fastest course in the world if winds don<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8216;<\/span><span lang=\"en-AE\">t come into play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-AE\">The one and a half-loop 21.1 km (13.1 mile) run course starts at transition at Jumeirah Public Beach and leads athletes along the coastline<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, until the finish at Jumeirah Public Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Patrial road closures will be implemented along the running and cycling routes on Friday, between 6am and 1pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Traffic Restrictions<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Area around Umm Suqueim Park between Jumeirah Rd and Beach will be closed from 6:00am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Jumeirah Rd. &#8211; Al Thanya St. coming from North (Dubai): From 7:00am &#8211; 9:00am, controlled passing will be allowed, Al Thanya St. From 9:00am &#8211; 1:00pm, it will be closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Jumeirah Rd. &#8211; Umm Suqueim St. coming from Al Sufouh Rd.: From 7:00am &#8211; 1:00pm,Entrance to the Jumeirah Rd. will be blocked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Umm Suqueim St. &#8211; Al Sufouh Rd.: From 7:00am &#8211; 1:00pm.
