TENA, the world\u2019s leading incontinence brand, in partnership with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, yesterday hosted a panel discussion in the Expo 2020 Swedish Pavilion entitled \u2018Breaking Stigmas Around Women Ageing\u2019. Organized as part of ongoing efforts to overcome the social stigma and misconceptions experienced by women surrounding menopause, the panel comes following the UN\u2019s announcement last year that it would refer to menopause as the \u2018age of renewal\u2019 in Arabic. The term has since been added to Al Maany, the Arabic dictionary as a new entry.<\/p>\n
Moderated by the award-winning TV presenter Rania Ali, the panel featured acclaimed Egyptian actress Shereen Reda; Chief of Strategic Partnership within the Division of Communications and Strategic Partnerships of UNFPA, Mariarosa Cutillo; and Global Brand and Communication Director of TENA, Meta Redstedt. The event was organized as part of the broader \u2018Despair No More\u2019 campaign, in reference to the more common yet negative term used to refer to menopause as the \u2018age of despair\u2019. The campaign seeks to tackle the social stigma connected to female health and ageing.<\/p>\n
Menopause is a particularly challenging phase in any women\u2019s life, but with many also experiencing bladder weakness or incontinence, it can be especially taboo. Research from theNational Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)<\/a>tells us that 1 in 3 women over 35 experiencing such symptoms. Despite the high incidence rate, globally urinary incontinence is under-reported, under-diagnosed and under-treated.<\/p>\n
