The winning team will now present their solutions at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November\u00a0 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the initiative,\u00a0<b>Dr. Matthew Sukumaran, Chief Operating Officer of Heriot Watt University Dubai,\u00a0<\/b>said, \u201c<i>The Packaging for Sustainability Programme, a cornerstone of\u00a0 our university\u2019s commitment to addressing environmental challenges through innovative research\u00a0 and collaboration, was launched with the signing of an MoU between the two institutions in April\u00a0 2024. This programme not only addresses a pressing global challenge but also empowers our\u00a0 students and faculty to contribute to the development of future-proof solutions for a more\u00a0 sustainable world.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Giuseppe Saba, CEO and Board Member of Dubai Humanitarian\u00a0<\/b>said: \u201cOur collaboration\u00a0 with Heriot-Watt University Dubai reflects a commitment to fostering innovation that tackles real world challenges. Sustainable packaging is not just a technological or design challenge; it is\u00a0 essential to building a responsible future for all. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire the next\u00a0 generation to be changemakers and develop solutions that will impact industries far beyond\u00a0 humanitarian supply chains. We look forward to seeing the winning team\u00a0 present their ideas on the global stage at COP29, demonstrating the crucial role of young\u00a0 innovators in shaping a sustainable tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With packaging identified as a significant contributor to global waste and resource depletion,\u00a0 Heriot-Watt University Dubai and Dubai Humanitarian are taking decisive steps to drive awareness\u00a0 and action around sustainable packaging solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The Packaging for Sustainability Programme aims to strengthen collaboration between Heriot Watt University Dubai and our strategic sponsors, including NRS Relief, Expo City Group, Help\u00a0 Logistics (part of the K\u00fchne Foundation), and Friesland Campina, along with our knowledge\u00a0 partners Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), Accenture, DHL, SIM Institute, SEE Institute, and\u00a0 UNHCR. The programme also aims to promote and implement sustainable packaging practices\u00a0 and form new research collaborations that address packaging challenges in key industries,\u00a0 including logistics, food and beverage, e-commerce, and humanitarian supply chains.
