Newcomers Al Tadawi 1 made an instant impact while securing a stunning 3-1 victory over defending champions Zabeel as the volleyball competition of the 12th<\/sup>\u00a0Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament got under way at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Hall.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>competitions are\u00a0part of the 12th\u00a0<\/span>‘Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament<\/span>‘, the largest sporting event of its kind<\/span>\u00a0that was\u00a0launched and sponsored by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai<\/a>, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defen<\/span>ce and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

This mega event\u00a0is held annually during the holy month of Ramadan at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Manso<\/span>or bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, under the slogan\u00a0<\/span>‘Limitless\u00a0<\/span>Capabilities<\/span>‘.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Participating in the tournament for the first time\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0players\u00a0<\/span>mainly\u00a0from Dynamo Moscow, one of Russia<\/span>‘s most prestigious clubs,\u00a0<\/span>Al Tadawi 1 fought back from a set down to\u00a0open the volleyball tournament with a 3-1 victory over\u00a0<\/span>defending champions,\u00a0Zabeel.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Brimming with confidence, Zabeel\u00a0dominat<\/span>ed much of\u00a0the first\u00a0<\/span>set\u00a0to secure a\u00a0<\/span>close\u00a027-25\u00a0<\/span>win and go clear 1-0. But, with Maksim Sapozhkov, Denis Bogdan, Anton Semyshev and Ilia Vlasov finding their rhythm it seemed to be the night of the underdogs as Al Tadawi 1 ran away with the next three sets, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21 to lodge the first major upset of the volleyball competition.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Sapozhkov was\u00a0<\/span>rightly adjudged the\u00a0M<\/span>ost\u00a0V<\/span>aluable\u00a0P<\/span>layer for a game-high 16 points, followed by Bogdan (13) and 12 points apiece from Semyshev and Vlasov.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The second match of the night went the distance with Al Ameed securing a hard-fought 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10) win against HFH.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

With neither of the teams allowing each other any liberty, it all boiled down to the versatile outside hitter and player of the match Luca Porro, who topscored with 22 points, even as his teammates Tommaso Stefani \u2013 who was menacing both in the attack and blocking while adding 20 valuable points – Mattia Orioli (18) and Fabian Plak (14) that eventually tipped the scales in favour of Al Ameed.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Tug-of-War\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/b>ontinue<\/span><\/b>s<\/u><\/u><\/b><\/u><\/p>\n

The tug-of-war championship<\/span>s entered\u00a0its second day, witnessing\u00a0<\/span>some more\u00a0intense competition and excitement among participating teams\u00a0<\/span>in all three categories.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The National Guard<\/span>s secured their second straight win with a smooth 2-0 win against\u00a0Dubai Police<\/span>, while the Ministry of Defen<\/span>ce\u00a0<\/span>got the better of\u00a0Dubai State Security Department, 2-0<\/span>\u00a0even as\u00a0Ras Al Khaimah Civil Defen<\/span>ce\u00a0<\/span>brushed aside\u00a0Dubai Civil Defen<\/span>ce 2-0<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0Land Forces\u00a0<\/span>beat\u00a0the Ministry of Education, 2-0<\/span>\u00a0in the\u00a0Government Departments and Institutions category<\/span>.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Competition in the Community\u00a0<\/span>category<\/span>\u00a0too was stiff with\u00a0the IFBB Academy defeat<\/span>ing\u00a0the Dulsco Group, Transguard Group\u00a0<\/span>skipped past\u00a0Al Musalmani, EFS Champions\u00a0<\/span>beat\u00a0Agnes Contracting, Al Jawarih defeated Al Habtoor Group\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0Dutco Group\u00a0<\/span>tamed\u00a0Al Sahel Company<\/span>.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

In other encounters held later in the night,\u00a0Al Kawaser defeated Al Asifa, AG\u00a0<\/span>handed out\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>first defeat to the\u00a0Kerala Kings and the Fighters\u00a0<\/span>got the better of\u00a0Truss General Trading<\/span>.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

In the junior category, Sharjah Police Science Academy defeated the Ahmed bin Rashid School<\/span>,\u00a02-0<\/span>, while the A25 Gym\u00a0<\/span>beat\u00a0B Ninja. The Desert Storm\u00a0<\/span>was also in smooth form while defeating\u00a0the IFBB Academy<\/span>, while the Sharjah Sports Council\u00a0<\/span>had to dig in deep before securing a close 2-1 verdict against\u00a0the Sharjah Self-Defen<\/span>ce Club<\/span>.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Strong\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/b>o<\/span><\/b>ntests\u00a0<\/b>in Wheelchair Basketball<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Entering its fourth day, the wheelchair basketball tournament witnessed strong competition<\/span>s with the Dubai Municipality\u00a0<\/span>securing a close 20-18 win against\u00a0the Community Development Authority<\/span>.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Sharjah Police\u00a0<\/span>were even more menacing through their 21-20 result against\u00a0the Roads and Transport Authority. Dubai Courts\u00a0<\/span>secured their first win with a 27-16 result against\u00a0the Department of Finance<\/span>, while the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services\u00a0<\/span>eased through 24-13 against Dubai Club for People of\u00a0Determin<\/span>ation.<\/u><\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Dubai Municipality\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0now\u00a0<\/span>perched at the top of the\u00a0stand<\/span>ings\u00a0<\/span>in Group 2 with\u00a06 points, followed by Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, also\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a06 points<\/span>,\u00a0but\u00a0<\/span>an inferior scoreline. The Community Development Authority and the General Directorate of Identity, Foreigners Affairs and Determination are at the bottom of the group.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Group 1<\/span>\u00a0is led by\u00a0Dubai Police with 6 points and a total of 90\u00a0<\/span>baskets, the highest among all teams. They are followed by t<\/span>eams from\u00a0Roads and Transport Authority and Sharjah Police, with 5 points each,\u00a0<\/span>while\u00a0the Dubai Courts and Department of Finance<\/span>\u00a0are tied at the end\u00a0with 4 points each.<\/span><\/p>\n
