The airport will deliver the site as a cold shell, with\u00a0dnata\u00a0undertaking a full operational fit-out of the terminal, including critical infrastructure and the installation of a semi-motorised materials handling system.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately A$6 million of the investment will be\u00a0allocated\u00a0to specialised equipment and technology to ensure scalable,\u00a0efficient\u00a0and future-ready cargo operations, including capabilities to support specialised cargo such as pharmaceuticals and other time- and temperature-sensitive shipments.<\/p>\n<p>Freighter operations are scheduled to\u00a0commence\u00a0in July 2026, ahead of the airport\u2019s full passenger opening later\u00a0this\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<p>The facility\u00a0will\u00a0handle up to 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually at maturity, strengthening capacity in New South Wales, which plays\u00a0a central role\u00a0in Australia\u2019s air freight network.<\/p>\n<p>The new operation is projected to create approximately 50 direct roles in its\u00a0initial\u00a0phase, with further employment opportunities\u00a0anticipated\u00a0as volumes grow and operations expand. In addition to direct jobs, the facility\u00a0will\u00a0generate broader economic benefits across freight\u00a0forwarding,\u00a0logistics, ground\u00a0handling\u00a0and associated supply chain services in Western Sydney.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Burt\u00a0Sigsworth, Managing Director\u00a0of\u00a0dnata\u00a0Airport Operations\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Australia<\/strong>\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cOur investment in Western Sydney International reflects strong confidence in the region\u2019s long-term economic trajectory and the critical role air freight plays in supporting Australian trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy establishing a purpose-built cargo facility from day one, we are strengthening supply chain resilience, supporting local industry and creating skilled employment opportunities in one of the country\u2019s fastest-growing economic corridors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The development of dedicated cargo infrastructure at WSI is expected\u00a0to enhance efficiency for airlines, freight\u00a0forwarders\u00a0and integrators, improving connectivity for time-sensitive and high-value goods moving through New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simon Hickey, Chief Executive Officer of WSI,\u00a0<\/strong>said\u00a0dnata was a terrific addition to the airport\u2019s premier\u00a024-hour\u00a0Cargo Precinct and would provide cargo and ground handling services for both international and domestic airlines, boosting the nation\u2019s critical supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to welcome\u00a0dnata\u00a0Cargo to WSI\u2019s\u00a0brand-new cargo hub, bringing its\u00a0top-tier services for airlines and their customers\u00a0and creating more meaningful job opportunities for workers across Greater Sydney,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur purpose-built 24-hour Cargo Precinct will increase Sydney\u2019s air cargo capacity and provide dedicated access via the upgraded Northern Road\u00a0with\u00a0close\u00a0proximity\u00a0to growing freight and\u00a0logistics\u00a0centres at Kemps Creek\u00a0and the Aerotropolis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike everything at WSI, the Cargo Precinct is built for growth, and while we\u2019re excited to open stage one and launch operations by the end of July, it also has capacity to expand significantly over the years ahead, in line with market demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King\u00a0<\/strong>welcomed dnata Cargo and said the new freight operator will connect Western Sydney to the world, allowing us to move another 60,000 tonnes of cargo through Sydney\u2019s new airport every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWestern Sydney is the logistics heart of NSW, and our new airport will work hand in hand with other Australian Government investments, like the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal, to get goods off planes and across the country quickly and efficiently,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis airport is built to grow, which will give Australian businesses the capacity and ability to grow alongside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WSI\u2019s Cargo Precinct includes warehousing and will be capable of servicing eight wide-body\u00a0aircraft\u00a0at any one\u00a0time and\u00a0will\u00a0open with\u00a0capacity to\u00a0handle at least 220,000\u00a0tonnes\u00a0of freight a year.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement builds on\u00a0dnata\u2019s\u00a0earlier commitment, through its Catering &amp; Retail division, to invest in developing an advanced inflight catering centre within WSI\u2019s Cargo Precinct.
