{"id":758,"date":"2013-04-25T20:15:37","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T16:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/?p=758"},"modified":"2013-04-25T20:15:37","modified_gmt":"2013-04-25T16:15:37","slug":"uae-to-send-home-built-satellites-in-space-by-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dubaicityguide.com\/site\/uae-to-send-home-built-satellites-in-space-by-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"UAE to send home built satellites in space by 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dubai: Officials have revealed details of a new earth imaging satellite that will be the first satellite to be completed in the UAE.<br \/>\nDubaiSat-3 is scheduled for launch in 2017 after its development is completed in Dubai by the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST).<\/p>\n<p>The 330kg-satellite will be able to take high quality images of the UAE and other places \u00e2\u20ac\u201d down to a sub-metre resolution of 70cm \u00e2\u20ac\u201d from an orbit 600km above Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The pictures can be used for various purposes such as weather studies, mapping, and infrastructure planning.<br \/>\nCurrently, government departments have to purchase such images from non-UAE operators, said Salem Al Merri, EIAST\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s assistant director general for scientific and technical affairs.\u00c2\u00a0However, DubaiSat-3 is not a commercial project, Al Merri added.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came during the project\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s announcement at a Dubai press conference attended by top EIAST officials.\u00c2\u00a0They said a team of 45 UAE experts and engineers will lead the project development from scratch to launch.<\/p>\n<p>However, initial development will take place in South Korea in collaboration with Satrec Initiative (SI), a solution provider for Earth observation missions.<\/p>\n<p>This is EIAST\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s third satellite programme with SI \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the earlier ones being DubaiSat-1 and DubaiSat-2 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d but DubaiSat-3 will be led by Emirati engineers with SI taking a consultative role.<\/p>\n<p>DubaiSat-2 is scheduled for lift-off in 2013; DubaiSat-1 was sent into space in 2009 from Kazakhstan.<br \/>\nOfficials said the latest satellite will have significantly better imaging, pointing, downloading and computing capabilities, but remained light-lipped about the cost of the project.<\/p>\n<p>DubaiSat-3 will be transferred to EIAST\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s satellite manufacturing facilities in Dubai\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Khawaneej area midway through the project. Once here, it will be built by an all-Emirati team.<\/p>\n<p>EIAST is to start developing its own clean room and satellite manufacturing facilities, consisting of labs that keep out dust and humidity.<br \/>\nAl Merri said EIAST will study various options related to the DubaiSat-3 launch \u00e2\u20ac\u201d which could include lift-off from\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tajmahalhotels.com\">India\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d based on costs, and the chosen date and orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153eye in the sky\u00e2\u20ac\u009d will have a lifetime of five years from launch.\u00c2\u00a0EIAST Chairman of the Board of Directors Hamad Al Mansouri said: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The ultimate goal of [EIAST] is to develop a core team of local experts and position UAE as a global leader in science and technology.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are inspired by the passion and dedication of\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohammed_bin_Rashid_Al_Maktoum\">His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum<\/a>, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dubai.travel-culture.com\/uae\/\">UAE<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and Ruler of Dubai, who is the leading proponent of the EIAST initiative.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>EIAST Director General Yousuf Al Shaibani added: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The DubaiSat-3 is an important project as it tests our own satellite manufacturing capabilities and ultimately gives insights to further improve future satellite development programmes.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>There were already discussions at the press conference of a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcDubaiSat-4,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 with Al Merri saying a possible successor \u00e2\u20ac\u0153could be different, have a wider swathe or width.
