The 10th anniversary of the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge, powered by ŠKODA and part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series saw over 2,500 cyclists take part in the biggest Cycle Challenge weekend in the Middle East. Following three successful  Build-Up Rides with over 1,500 cyclists from September to November, the final race weekend was a huge success with an increasing number of participants flying in from all over of the world to compete here in Dubai.

The event started with the 100km race at the Dubai Autodrome before going on the magnificent roads of Dubai with iconic views of the city including the new Expo 2020 site. There was plenty of support from the city’s residents who were cheering on the cyclists in several neighborhoods including two fan zones outside Spinneys Town Centre and the Spinneys in The Villa Centro.

Part of this morning’s event was Andy Schleck, ŠKODA cycling ambassador and the winner of 2010 Tour de France who took on the 100km Challenge and signed autographs and took selfies for fans in the ŠKODA tent. In addition, as part of the Golden Key competition by ŠKODA, one lucky cyclist was awarded a car for a year sponsored by Ali & Sons, ŠKODA’s distribution partner in the UAE, which was presented by Andy.

10th Anniversary  

To celebrate the spirit of cycling and the achievements of the cyclists who have been committed to competing in the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge since the start, 10-year anniversary medals were awarded, Andro Dutoit has been taking part in the event for ten years said: “Standing in the dark at Nad Al Sheba waiting for the starters gun, at the start line at the Autodrome and going zig-zag across Dubai and past landmark buildings, to riding out into the desert, the routes have always been different! Sprinting towards the line for a top spot finish time to making lasting friendships with fellow cyclists during the races, my experience has just been something else! As for today, it was a great day out and the cyclist village has just become better and better, year on year. Kudos to the Dubai Police, route marshals, the countless volunteers and all the others working behind the scene without which something like this is not possible. Will definitely be taking part for many years to come.”

38km Community Ride

In an aim to become more inclusive for people of all age groups and experience and promote the sport for everyone, a new 38km Community Ride was introduced to the big cycling weekend. Over 200 cyclists took on the 38km route and enjoyed a fun morning with friends and family in the Spinneys Village after the ride.

Junior Rides and Mini Challenge

The Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge has always been an active part of promoting the sport of cycling among the younger age demographic of the country for the purpose of increasing awareness and interest in children from a young age regarding active lifestyles and taking up cycling as a competitive sport. The organisers would like to thank Prime Medical Center for their involvement, over 200 young participants took on the Junior rides which took place at the Dubai Autodrome last night to ensure the younger cyclists had the opportunity to be part of the biggest cycle challenge in the Middle East.

This year also saw the return of the Mini Challenge for the little ones between the ages of 2-5 years, participating in the balance bike course free of charge for the sole purpose of showcasing an innovative way of learning to ride a bike and having a bit of fun!

Revolution Cycles:

The brilliant team from Revolution Cycles Dubai  was on-site to ensure that all participants were prepared and ready to go for the race and also offered assistance to those who needed help before, during and after.

Events such as this ensures the cycling community in the UAE has strengthened and grown in numbers, and will continue to do so with every additional participant signing up for the races organized each year. Organisers are hoping to see everyone for the 11^th Spinneys Dubai 92 Challenge in 2020.
