10 February 2019 Dubai: Following a successful first term for the University of South Wales (USW) Dubai, the University is offering the first in a series of guest lectures and events at its Dubai South campus in 2019, to take place from 10am to 12pm on Sunday 17th February.

The lecture and discussion around ‘Engineering engines to work better, for longer, at lower cost’ will be taken by Rolls-Royce Senior Fellow, Andrew Harrison, with input from Dr Rukshan Navaratne, the University of South Wales’ aero expert, and will be aimed at students and academics from the university, as well as from schools and colleges across Dubai.

This session will perfectly complement USW programmes on offer at the Dubai South campus, namely the BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering with integrated European Aviation Safety Agency / General Civil Aviation Authority (EASA/GCAA) training, and BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering top-up degree and Foundation course, through which a student can gain the right qualifications to move onto the degree programme.

Professor Julie Lydon, University of South Wales Vice-Chancellor, said: “At USW, we pride ourselves on giving students in the region the chance to learn from industry-leading experts in the field, and this collaboration with Rolls Royce offers exactly that – our students will have access to world-leading skills and experience.

“It is our intention that our industry partnerships will be as strong as they are in the UK, and we therefore look forward to many more such events at our Dubai South campus.”

Graham Outterside, Country Director for Rolls-Royce International, commented: “We fully support the aerospace sector in the UAE, and USW is an important part of that. In the longer term, we expect that some of these bright young students could be potential candidates for the Rolls-Royce graduate scheme, so that we will not only continue to have world-class engineers but also world-class engineers who have been brought up living and working in the GCC.”

USW’s purpose-built 3,000 square metre facility at Dubai South Business Park has state-of-the-art learning and teaching space over two storeys, including an EASA/GCAA accredited workshop with an aircraft and CFM56-3 jet engine, mechanical principles laboratories and soundproofed maintenance areas. Dedicated laboratory space for IT and electronic practical tasks and avionics systems are also a key feature that will provide hands-on practical experience for students, and composite-based equipment to produce sample materials. The tooling is provided through a strategic partnership with Snap-on Tools Industrial.
