New Boy Memphis Shines As Manchester United Close In On Champions League
Memphis Depay had a night to remember as Manchester United beat Belgian club Club Brugge 3-1 at Old Trafford and move a step closer to qualifying for the Champions League. The young Dutchman scored 2 fantastic goals and set up the third goal for Marouane Fellaini deep into stoppage time.
Manchester United went into this match with the same team that beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Friday. They stared the game in a mixed fashion. Wayne Rooney almost scored in the 2nd minute when Adnan Januzaj delivered a low cross which Rooney missed narrowly and in the 3rd minute, Micheal Carrick’s backpass to goalkeeper Sergio Romero almost ended up in the back of the net but the Argentine goalkeeper cleared the ball away.
In the 8th minute, disaster struck for the home side when a Victor Vazquez free kick was turned into his own net by Micheal Carrick when he tried to clear a bouncing ball from eight yards out.
Five minutes later, United equalized courtesy some great skill by Memphis when Carrick passed it to the Dutchman and he lifted the ball over the defender and with some smart play, faked a defender and even though there were 6 defenders around him, he managed to take shot from 8 yards out and scored.
In the 24th minute, Cools sent a half volley towards goal from the corner but it lacked pace which made it easier for Romero to catch the ball. Wayne Rooney came close to scoring in the 25th minute when Mata crossed it to the striker and he attempted an overhead kick which was cleared on the line and the resulting corner saw the England captain flick a header which was just wide.
Twelve minutes later, Memphis made a good run in the box and tried to lay the ball to Rooney but lacked the composure to do so and in the 38th minute, Memphis was again involved when he hit a stinging shot which Bruzzese kept out safely.
In the 43rd minute, Memphis put Manchester United in the lead for the first time in the game. He was put through by Blind and the young Dutchman cut in from the left and unleashed a shot which snuck in at the far post making it 2 goals for the night. The second half ended at 2-1.
The second half started with Memphis at it again when in the 47th minute, he delivered a fizzing cross to Rooney but it was too quick for the English striker to reach. Four minutes later, Memphis took a shot outside the box which bounced in front of Bruzesse and he kept it out.
In the 63rd minute, Memphis had a glorious chance to make it 3-1 for United and to get his hat trick when Shaw put in a low cross for Rooney who set up Memphis with a brilliant backheel but the Dutchman blazed his shot over.
Four minutes later, Schweinsteiger almost scored his first United goal from a corner when he lined up for a shot from 6 yards but the Brugge defender managed to clear it. In the 74th minute, Memphis’s freekick swerved a little too much and it was wide of the goal.
Six minutes later, Brandon Mechele was sent off for Brugge after receiving his second yellow card of the game courtesy a careless slide on the back of Javier Hernandez. The 88th minute saw shouts of a handball by De Bock inside his own penalty area turned down by the referee.
In the 2nd minute of stoppage time, Daley Blind delivered a telling ball in the box and Bastian headed it in the path of Smalling who directed his header on target but Bruzesse did extremely well to hold on to it.
But in the last play of the match, the tie was sealed by the big Belgian midfielder, Fellaini when Memphis delivered a good cross in the box and the Belgian midfielder was there to head home and make it 3-1. Memphis Depay was the man of the match with his brace which were his first and second united goals and 1 assist. The next leg will be played in Brugge on the 26th of August.
