A new Wi-Fi router has been launched by Google called OnHub. This is Google’s latest move to get ready for the connected home and also because more users can be drawn to by Google for their services.

OnHub is a cylindrical router which comes with inbuilt antennas that scan the airwaves to spot the fastest connection according to Google.

This router will allow users to be able to prioritise a device which will help them in data-heavy activities such as downloading or streaming. This prioritization is done so that they can get faster internet speeds for these data-heavy activities.

OnHub can be hooked up with Google’s On app which is available on Android and iOS in order to run any checks relating the network and to keep track of the bandwidth use among other things.

According to Google, OnHub automatically updates with new features and the latest security upgrades replicating the company’s Android OS and Chrome Browser do.

TP-LINK, the network company is responsible for the manufacture of this router and Google also hinted that Asus could be the second manufacturing partner for this product.

The launch of this product has happened on the back of Google’s restructuring process and hence creating Alphabet Inc, a holding company to pool its subsidiaries and separate the core web advertising business from newer ventures such as driverless cars. They also plan on making products for the smart home as part of their venture.

Google has also been working on providing faster internet with its Google Fiber services in some US cities. Through the launch of Project Loon, it aims to expand the reach of the internet. Under this project, there are floating balloons 20 kilometers above the Earth’ surface to beam internet connection to rural and remote areas.

The Google OnHub is not available in stores yet but can be pre-ordered for $199.99 (Dh 734) at online retailers such as Google Store, Amazon.com Inc and Walmart.com
