Prominent milestones across 45 years
ABB’s first significant cooperation in the UAE focused on enabling the efficient supply of desalinated water. As the UAE increased investments in large-scale projects, ABB later supported the automation of Dubai International Airport and began powering Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah.
Owing to its expertise in powering metro stations globally, including the Delhi Metro and Guangzhou and Shenzhen Metro lines, ABB was chosen to power the Dubai Metro – the first automated metro system in the Middle East. The partnership with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) witnessed ABB design and install Substation Control and Monitoring Systems (SCMS) for Dubai Metro’s gas-insulated switchgear substations.
ABB also installed the electrical power systems to keep the world’s tallest building running 24/7. The Burj Khalifa features the world’s highest substation, enabling the building’s facility management team to monitor the power supply of 400 electrical loads at the site, including 57 elevators and a 24 megawatt (MW) air conditioning system.
