PUBLISHING PARTNERS

As part of its community experience Dubai Design District is holding complimentary creative workshops in the Design Quarter throughout the summer for both adults and children. Running from 14 July to 25 August 2018, the workshops are being facilitated by Tashkeel, Jam Jar, Reem Al Awadhi and Jaffat Al Aqlamto offer an alternative way to spend the weekends.

Budding artists and designers can enjoy painting, drawing and learning about photography. Most workshops will offer two sessions of the same class, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. d3’s retailers and eateries are open during the weekends, allowing visitors the chance to experience the home-grown concepts and tantilising food available in the Design Quarter.

Wire Insects by Tashkeel

Description: This workshop enables participants to make fantastic and imaginative creatures using wire, feathers and fabric. We’ll look at some beautiful insects for inspiration, before you start to make your very own insect zoo.

Audience: Kids aged 4-15 years (kids between 4-8 must be accompanied by an adult)

Movement in Photography by Tashkeel

Description: What is the effect of black and white on place? A moment in time, colour shows that it is alive and present. How can we create a deeper sense of the vibrancy of a place through motion? Considering space and place we will begin the session looking at text and images of architectural spaces and places and discuss the values found in these. Participants will then be given time to explore d3 with their phones

Watercolours for beginners with Reem Alawadhi

Description: This class will cover the basics of watercolor specifically painting animals, students will learn to have more confidence in painting with watercolor, learn hidden tricks and techniques of watercolor.

Fantastic Portraits by Jam Jar

Description: The workshop aims at introducing participants to acrylic paint as a medium and
are shown, step by step how to manipulate the paint with a variety of tools to get different effects, create texture, depth, layers and colour combinations with reference to applicable artists who have used similar techniques.

Sun, Sea and Salt! by Jam Jar

Description: Keeping with the theme of the Summer season, participants will learn to paint with the fluidity of water by blending colours and priming the canvas. Using salt and watercolour techniques, texture and relief is added to their work. Participants will be guided on the technique of dabbing or rubbing on canvas.

Drawing Inventions by Tahskeel

Description: Have you ever tried to draw with your mouth? What about drawing with your head? In this workshop we will play with creating our own drawing tools using found objects, lots of tape and each other. This workshop is about breaking down the drawing boundaries and having lots of fun.

Book Binding and Painting by Jaffat Al Aqlam

Description: Participants will create their own journal/watercolor sketchbook from scratch using saddle stitch or Japanese 4 holes binding. Participants will paint their own book cover.

Drawing from memory versus observation by Tashkeel

Description: This dynamic session allows you to discover how to plan your drawing quickly and expressively using a life model. Learn how to master composition, proportion and
volume to create portraits that reflect the essence of someone that not even a great photo can capture!

Zines by Jaffat Al Aqlam

Description: This workshop is for anyone who wants a simple introduction to the world of zines, a rad form of expression in print based media. Zines are generally short self-published works that are not made for profit, but self-expression. For this workshop, participants are encouraged to bring old magazines, journal entries, found objects and old books for collaging. Participants will be working with different sometimes unconventional materials (washi tape, glitter, collected objects, stickers etc) to organise content, design the spreads to a specific theme (memory, colour, idea, etc.), and put those together to take home their self-published zines!

Altered Realities by Jaffat Al Aqlam

Decription: Participants will be encouraged to create an alternate reality through repurposing old or new photographs that didn’t turn out as expected. Through mixed media experimentations with nonconventional material, photographs will be reimagined to IDEALLY negate the norm.
