In many European cities, the main mode of transportation is cycling. Whole cities are laid out with bike tracks and all public corners are accessible by a bicycle. This eco friendly, pro-health transport option is sensible and possible in Europe with health/environment conscious communities, pre-planned streets and a reasonable climate. So what about Dubai?

The Road Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is currently working on a bicycle master plan that involves the construction of over 900 kilometers of cycle paths linking various communities, beaches malls, parks and other public spaces. The project that is worth AED 32 million is set to release by 2020.

This year, the bike paths intend to span across Jumeirah connecting malls, beaches and shops as well as stretching towards Dubai Marina and Al Sufouh alongside the tram route. After this initial progression of the bike paths, additional plans are being conceived for routes in Al Barsha connected Mall of The Emirates to the surround residential areas and the Sharaf DG metro station.

The whole venture is a mission to introduce and develop a number of ideals in Dubai communities such as that of environmental sustainability, healthy living, exercise, and alternative transport. The aim of the project is to encourage residents to cycle instead of using their cars. RTA officials claim “The bicycle master plan will ensure a safe environment for residents to choose pedaling over driving.”

This development in the bicycle sphere has created a market for many upcoming urban cycle shops and the influx of various cycling groups. A new sense of community is growing through increased accessibility to the sport, with all ages, nationalities and genders participating. It will soon be possible to turn your back on your car and rely on pedal power to get you where you want to go.
