Dubai’s Leading Centre For Homegrown Art And Design Presents Summer Showcase Made In Tashkeel 2018
Tashkeel will present the ninth edition of its annual summer exhibition showcasing the achievements of its members, workshop participants and recently presented artists.
Made in Tashkeel will feature more than 35 works by at least 25 artists from 16 countries, reflecting the diversity of the 10-year-old organisation’s users, members and participants.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, Deputy Director of Tashkeel, said: “Made in Tashkeel is one of the highlights of the Tashkeel annual programme. It explores the depth and diversity of the community’s practice as well as the expanse of creative possibilities conceived by them throughout the year.”
All works exhibited refer in one way or another to the unique mix of facilities and programmes available at Tashkeel, as well as the nurturing and collaborative environment we seek to uphold. Every Made in Tashkeel is full of surprises from our members and participants, and this edition, in our 10th anniversary year, is particularly special.”
Spanning a wide range of disciplines, the works take many forms, including photography, mixed media, screen-printing, sculpture, video, calligraphy, painting, jewellery and installation. Each individual has been part of the Tashkeel journey, whether as a member, instructor, artist-in-residence or participant in a solo or group show. Selected works will be available for sale.
Exhibiting artists include:
Saeed Al Madani, a recipient of the 2016/17 Abraaj RCA Innovation Scholarship. Born and raised in Dubai, he is currently taking a master’s degree in Printmaking at London’s Royal College of Art. A self-taught artist, Al Madani focuses on the symbolic language of printmaking to express Emirati identity, culture and tradition. He is also interested in exploring what it means to live in a rapidly developing country that is heading toward cultural homogenisation at a faster pace than in many other emerging economies. At Made in Tashkeel, Al Madani will present The Autonomous, The Fragmentary and The Discontinuous, a screen-print on folded paper.
Jalal Bin Thaneya, an Emirati fine art photographer who is fascinated by the histories and legacies of oil and gas, scrapyard processing and other industrial sectors, each of which have played a key role in the development of modern society. His depictions of industrial landscapes are a signature photographic expression. At Made in Tashkeel, Bin Thaneya presents the monumental photographic work Scrap Yard 1.
Hind Mezaina and Tulip Hazbar will present Music TV (2017), an audiovisual montage celebrating female singers and dancers that weaves music from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Both are Tashkeel members. Mezaina’s work delves into themes of collective memory, the notion of heritage, and media representation of Dubai. Primarily using photography, and recently experimenting with videography and collage, her work has been exhibited numerous times in numerous exhibitions, both in the UAE and abroad. Collaborator Tulip Hazbar’s practice revolves around reconstructing memories and the ritual of collecting. The graphic designer and visual artist attempts to find answers to questions about value, transience and permanence and works in a variety of media, including installations, found objects and illustration. In 2016, she took part in Tashkeel’s See Saw Seeds artist residency exchange with Kobe Studio Y3, Japan.
Chafa Ghaddar will present a work she created at the centre. The Space of the Avocado Tree, a fresco painted on wood, is an example of her exploration of natural elements, traditional techniques and contemporary artistic practice such as photography and site-specific installations.
A Tashkeel member, Ghaddar graduated in fine arts from Beirut’s Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA). She later studied in Florence, Italy taking an intensive course in fresco and traditional painting techniques. Since then, she has been developing a freelance career in wall painting and surface finishing in which she aims to merge decorative painting practice with contemporary art. Ghaddar has taken part in several collective art exhibitions and created murals for residential and hospitality spaces. In November 2014, she was awarded the Boghossian Art Prize for painting. Ghaddar is a recipient of the 2017 A.i.R Dubai residency programme, a partnership between Art Dubai, Tashkeel and Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Based in Dubai, she has been commissioned to produce a permanent public artwork for the emirate.
Brazilian artist Fabiola Chiminazzo graduated in Visual Arts from São Paulo’s Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado in 1994 and has since shown her work at group exhibitions across Brazil. She has received numerous accolades in the country. Her work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Arts of Sorocaba, São Paulo, and she has held art residencies in the city and in Rio de Janeiro.
Currently based in Dubai, Chiminazzo explores photography, printmaking, drawing, objects, installations and videography. Words, images, sounds and objects interplay in an evocative attempt to reveal what can be seen when we turn our eyes on ourselves. At Made in Tashkeel she will present three prints, produced using a combination of digital technology and heliography, a photographic process dating back two centuries.
Other exhibiting artists include Amal Al Gurg; Anjum Khan; Azza Al Qubaisi; Banu Colak; Debjani Bhardwaj; Elizabeth Dorazio; Elle Ford; Fatima Atallah; Hadil Moufti; Hamda Al Falasi; Huma Shoaib; Ibraheem Khamayseh; John Marsland; Kim Robertson; Kay Li; Manika Srivastav; Pamela Arent; Rasha Saffarini; Saher Nassar; Stefano Bolliger; Wissam Shawkat; Hessa Al Ajmani; and Myneandyours.
