in5, a startup incubator founded by TECOM Group, has announced its participation in Dubai Design Week (DXBDW) 2019, the region’s largest creative festival that helps consolidate Dubai’s status as the design capital of the Middle East.

At the event, set to take place from 11 to 16 November at Dubai Design District (d3), in5 will hold several activations, talks and workshops in collaboration with the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), the Dubai Design and Fashion Council (DDFC), and The Assembly.

Di-RES 2019: Miniaturising Interactive Technology

About:        In partnership with DIDI, in5 will present the ‘Miniaturising Interactive Technology’ exhibition by the alumni of the 2019 DIDI-in5 Residency Program – known as Di-Res 2019 – that has brought together DIDI students and faculty with in5 startups and members to translate Dubai’s skyline into smaller realities of the human experience through three projects: ‘Responsive Wearables’, ‘Touchable Holograms’, and ‘Sentient Environments’. During the eight-week residency program, the participants formed teams, conceived ideas, learned new digital modelling skills, and received training and mentorship from FabLab, a centre that provides the community with access to the latest digital fabrication tools and technologies.

Mixed Realities

About:        in5 will engage pre-college students in exploring the near future of mixed-reality virtual design through a fun, hands-on workshop, hosted by DIDI faculty member Sayjel Patel. Participants will use the Unity 3D video game engine to create their own software applications to be exhibited at DIDI.

3D-Print Your Photos As Lithophanes

About:        in5 and The Assembly will invite visitors to 3D-print their photos as lithophanes. A lithophane is a thin embossed or etched surface that reveals a picture when held against a light source. This workshop will demonstrate how to convert photographs into embossed 3D models and bring them to life with a 3D printer. The technique has been used since the 19th century to create stunning artworks through adding dimension to images.
