Lend Me Your Literacy
Young writers around the UAE will have a unique opportunity to share their talent with a global audience as part of an exciting community writing competition hosted by LendMeYourLiteracy in partnership with At the Top, Burj Khalifa, Dubai’s popular observatory deck that opens to spectacular views of the city and beyond.
LendMeYourLiteracy (LMYL) is a safe, online educational platform that connects young writers with an active, global audience. Teachers, parents, school leaders, authors and poets in over 190 countries access LendMeYourLiteracy to provide inspirational comments and feedback on students writing. LendMeYourLiteracy works with schools to raise writing standards and inspire young writers through student workshops, staff training and online resources.
“Publishing writing on LMYL is a great way to showcase learning in our schools and children will undoubtedly benefit from the audience and inspiration that LMYL provides,” said Ms Fatima Al Marri, CEO Schools agency KHDA.
LendMeYourLiteracy believes that all young writers in the UAE should have their creativity shared with the world. Evidence shows that children are motivated and inspired by a global audience and will be excited to showcase their creativity by participating in the competition. Schools are invited to submit up to 5 entries in to each category (5-8 years old and 9-12 years old) of our At the Top writing competition. Children can write in any way they choose about the theme ‘At the top’.
Ahmad Al Falasi, Executive Director – Group Operations of Emaar Properties PJSC, the developer of Burj Khalifa, said: “In addition to being the civic pride of our nation, Burj Khalifa is a global icon that drives humanity to push their boundaries of imagination. Through our support to LendMeYourLiteracy, which is dedicated to fostering the literary skills of children, we aim to inspire our future generation of writers to derive their creative energies from this iconic attraction.”
LMYL Teacher Jenny Murray explains “We are hopeful that many schools will engage with this unique opportunity to inspire young writers. Burj Khalifa is an icon in Dubai and winning the chance to write on 124th floor will be a truly memorable experience for our young writers.
While we foresee that many children will write about Burj Khalifa itself, students should be encouraged to approach the theme creatively and have fun with their writing. Above all, our judges will be looking for creativity when selecting our commended writers. We are excited to share talent from the UAE on our global platform.”
All submissions will be published on lendmeyourliteracy.com and be celebrated by a global audience. A panel of judges including authors, Maitha al Khayat and Rachel Hamilton and Fatma Al Marri, will select 15 commended writers from each category who will be invited to a unique LendMeYourLiteracy Day hosted at At the Top, Burj Khalifa. Commended writers will visit the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa on April 22, 2015 and engage in a creative writing workshop inspired by views from Dubai’s iconic landmark. All writing produced will be published on lendmeyourliteracy.com.
Submissions can be made in English or Arabic and details of the competition can be found at lendmeyourliteracy.com/atthetop. The competition is open to all schools in the UAE and schools are encouraged to participate in this unique community event.
