After the resounding success of “Agnes” in 2017, followed by the widely acclaimed “Carnage” in 2018, Orb Theatricals brings to you their third full-length in 2019! A poignant play about depression and its consequences, ‘Night, Mother is a 1983 Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Marsha Norman that was also nominated for the Tony Awards in the same year. The play is to be staged at the most sought-after theatre in town, The Junction in Alserkal Avenue, on the 26th and 27 th of April.

“’Night, Mother” revolves around Jessie Cates, who is a divorced single mother living a mundane life with her old mother Thelma Cates. The mother and daughter have a symbiotic relationship taking care of each other. While Thelma is happy with her Saturday night manicures, crochet work and cupcakes, and is very aware of Jessie and her solitary introvert nature, she has no idea of all the darkness Jessie carries inside her until Jessie makes an unbelievable declaration to her on a particular Saturday night. What ensues is a poignant story between mother and daughter telling us about the internal life that Jessie has been living, the one that she is now tired of, and Thelma’s attempts to pull her daughter back towards life, demanding from her to have the courage to live it to the fullest.

Director Sabiha Majgaonkar, who is playing Thelma Cates, says “Although ‘Night, Mother is a drama that will touch hearts and prod the tear glands of audiences, Marsha Norman has managed to write a serious play with a subtle dose of black humour for the most part, making it a very interesting well-rounded script that is sure to keep the audiences guessing the final outcome.”

Lead Actor Meghana Mundkur, who plays Jessie, is working for the first time with Sabiha and Orb Theatricals, and is really excited to be on board this project. “This experience is cathartic for me in so many ways,” says Meghana. She feels that Jessie allows her to tap into a lot of reserved potential inside her as an actor and she can’t wait to be onstage portraying this very complex character.
