Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute to give Arsenal the win as they ran out 1-0 winners against Chelsea in the FA Community Shield.

The midfielder’s goal proved to be the difference between the two sides in an important match which was played on a sunny afternoon at the Wembley stadium.

This was not just a battle between Arsenal and Chelsea but a battle between two rival managers, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. In build-up to the match, Mourinho talked about Wenger’s winless record against him by stating that he had lost to the smaller clubs in the League like West Brom, Crystal Palace and Stoke. Other than this, last year Mourinho mocked Wenger by saying that Wenger is a “failure in losing”.

Arsenal went into the game with their new signing and former Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech starting in goal but both the sides were missing their key attacking players. Chelsea started without Diego Costa who was injured and Arsenal were without their star man, Alexis Sanchez who was rested.

The match started off in a great fashion for arsenal as they took 15 seconds to test Chelsea’s young shot stopper, Thibaut Courtois who was forced to punch the ball away after Nemanja Matic lost the ball right after the kickoff courtesy good work by Theo Walcott.

In the 9th minute, Chelsea had a penalty appeal denied by referee, Anthony Taylor when Fabregas looked to have been challenged by Per Mertesacker but the referee didn’t see anything much in that challenge.

In the 24th minute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the Gunners the lead. The youngster received a pass from Theo Walcott and cut in Cesar Azpilicueta and unleashed a shot with his left foot into the left top corner of Thibaut Courtois which the Belgian keeper was unable to save.

Ten minutes later, Ramires missed one of the best chances of the half to level the score. Remy delivered a cross from just inside the box and after making a good run, Ramires just had to keep the ball down but failed to do so.

Mourinho bought on Radamel Falcao at the start of the 2nd half in place of Loic Remy. The best chance of the 2nd half and possible the best chance of the match came when Fabregas picked out Eden Hazard but the Belgian winger who had been anonymous all day skied a one-on-one chance over the bar from 10 yards.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud almost got a goal from his first touch 10 minutes later when Chamberlain set in a cross from the right and Giroud had to slide down to connect to it but should have tested Courtois.

In the 69th minute, Chelsea had their first shot on target when Oscar struck a free kick over the Arsenal wall but Cech was there to get his hand to that. Right after that Giroud should have made it 2-0 and finished the game when he skied a shot with his weaker foot from close range.

As the game went on, Chelsea tried to push for an equalizer but without the in-form Costa and a bad day for Eden Hazard were not helping in their search for the all-important goal and at this stage it looked as if Wenger’s winless streak against Mourinho was about to end.

Towards the end of the game Arsenal had two glorious chances to kill off the game but Courtois was present to save Chelsea and keep them in the game.

At the end of the match, Wenger and Mourinho did not shake hands and Mourinho admitted this in the media but “The Special One” showed great spirit when he congratulated each player personally as they went past him.
