“The theme of World Environment Day 2024, #GenerationRestoration, aligns with the historic UAE Consensus ratified during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which the UAE hosted at Expo City Dubai in November – December 2023. The UAE Consensus has set the world on the right climate action path to protect humanity, Planet Earth, and preserve natural resources. The theme also aligns with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)’s efforts to enhance Dubai’s future readiness through sustainable development and nature preservation. We follow the wise directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai one of the most climate-resilient cities worldwide, and a benchmark for cities of the future. This is achieved by integrating economic and social development, sustainability, and environmental protection,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“We advance the energy transition through globally leading projects such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, with a planned production capacity of more than 5,000MW by 2030. The solar park, whose production capacity has reached 2, 860MW, contributes to achieving the UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. DEWA also implemented a Project to produce green hydrogen. It is also implementing the pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta using clean energy; and other projects that aim to increase energy efficiency. Additionally, DEWA has launched many initiatives to accelerate digital transformation and support the green and circular economies. We encourage all stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices, enhance electricity and water efficiency, take advantage of nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and preserve terrestrial and marine habitats. We also launch campaigns to plant more trees, especially mangroves, because of their importance in preserving biodiversity,” added Al Tayer.
