Singapore Pavilion At Expo 2020 Dubai Comes Alive After Sundown Through A Mesmerising Multi-Sensory Display Of Greenery, Lights And Sound
The Singapore Pavilion proved to be a hit with Expo goers, welcoming more than 8,000 visitors over the opening weekend of Expo 2020 Dubai, who braved queues to experience a verdant journey in this green, living, self-sufficient ecosystem that integrates nature, architecture and technology.
Themed “Nature. Nurture. Future”, the Singapore Pavilion features a lush tropical urban landscape, complete with immersive exhibits and programmes, reflecting the city-state’s vision of becoming a City in Nature and celebrating the spirit of the city-state’s forward-thinking innovators. It is considered one of the greenest pavilions at the Expo with over 80,000 plants of more than 170 plant varieties, a prototype of what it means to be a sustainable, liveable and resilient city of the future.
In the day, a journey through the Pavilion is akin to a walk in the forest, with rays of daylight filtering through the verdant landscape. Come sundown, the Pavilion presents a different experience that evokes images of an enchanted forest, beckoning visitors to wander in and explore the seemingly living pavilion.
The lighting design, by Singapore-based practice Light Collab, illuminates and accentuates the Pavilion’s tropical landscape, presenting different effects and experiences through the day.
As night falls, the Singapore Pavilion transforms into a mesmerising world for curious visitors.
With the use of additional lighting, water features and the thriving greenery of the Pavilion are further enhanced at night.
Strategically-placed fibre optic lighting in the Ground Garden create the illusion of luminous fireflies flitting about in the twilight.
Come sundown, visitors will embark on an experiential journey akin to entering an enchanted rainforest.
The gently sloping Canopy Walk features concealed lighting that serves a guiding light to gently illuminate the way forward.
Lighting scenes change periodically with different colour schemes, transforming the ambience in the Pavilion.
Across the 1,550 square-metre site, the hanging garden and surrounding beams are aglow with grow lights that are carefully calibrated to support plant growth across various surfaces of the Pavilion.
These lights double up as an atmospheric layer of special colours to create an immersive biophilic environment, drawing one’s attention to different parts of the multi-layered and luxuriant foliage.
Four terrariums are set against a wall of more than 50 native orchid varieties in the Flower Cone.
The terrariums contain native orchid varieties with propagation apparatus and a pool of glistening plant gels.
The Flower Cone celebrates innovation and co-creation with nature through a creative play of light, shadows and the vivid colour of the orchids.
A pulsating performance that plays on different spectrums of light, the nightly Biomorphosis light show elevates the rhythm of nature with a soundscape composed by Singaporean musician Don Richmond. At 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm every evening, visitors will be treated to an enthralling display of light, shadows and sound at the Pavilion, illustrating humans’ connection with nature and showcasing the biophilic design that the Pavilion exemplifies.
