The Israel Pavilion’s Music Was Composed For Peace
Israel’s participation in Expo 2020 marks an exciting milestone for the country to further build relationships in the region. In its preparation, every aspect, including the music, was designed to align with the pavilion’s messaging: building a better future together.
Maestro Tom Cohen is the founder, chief conductor and musical director of The Jerusalem Orchestra East & West. He is internationally recognised for fusing musical styles from the East and West to create “Levant Music,” a new musical language. Cohen composed and conducted all the music of the Israel Pavilion, explaining: “Composing the music for the Expo2020 Dubai Israeli Pavilion, I tried to imagine – through sound –a hopeful future for my country, our region and in fact the world. I aimed to write a harmonious symphony played by instruments from the east and the west, with influences from all over the orient and the occident.I hope you like it and that the hope and sense of unity it sings stays with you long after you leave the pavilion.”
Josh Bendit,Director of the Israel Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai added: “The music of the Israel pavilion was composed to be both traditional and unique, while also being modern and electronic. The melody aims to be simple and catchy and rather than being from any one place is neither Jewish or Muslim, Arab nor European – but rather, unites all of them.
The Israel Pavilion is situated in the Opportunity District and was designed to represent an open tent, inviting everyone in. It will feature a wide variety of cultural activities, including numerous Israeli artists performing at the expo and an Israeli style party every Thursday night featuring DJs from the UAE and Israel.
