Start 2020 On A High Note: Celebrate The Anniversary Of Gibran Khalil Gibran’s Birth With A Visit To West End Musical ‘Broken Wings’
To celebrate Khalil Gibran’s 137th birthday on 6 January 2020, Broadway Entertainment Group and Dubai Opera are celebrating the power of literature and poetry to unite people across borders and generations by offering 137 pairs of seats to the musical ‘BROKEN WINGS’ for just AED 137 per person, or AED 274 per couple.
Khalil Gibran the globally renowned author of acclaimed novels such as ‘The Prophet’, ‘The Madman’, ‘Sand and Foam’ and ‘A Tear and a Smile’ was born in Lebanon on 6 January 1883. ‘BROKEN WINGS’, the musical based on Lebanese-born poet Kahlil Gibran’s 1912 autobiographical tale of the same name will debut at Dubai Opera on 17 January 2020. Written by Middle East duo Nadim Naaman and Dana Alfardan, directed by Bronagh Lagan and produced by Ali Matar, with orchestrations by Joe Davison, the production was originally staged in London’s West End.
Set to launch in Dubai with three performances taking place at Dubai Opera between 17 and 18 January 2020, ‘BROKEN WINGS’ is a stunning piece of contemporary music written to showcase the richness of Arabic literature and philosophy, allowing international and regional audiences, access to the complexity and beauty of Middle Eastern art and performance.
The musical first made its debut in London’s West End in August 2018 to sold-out shows, followed by a stellar performance which took place in Lebanon during the famous Beiteddine Festival in July 2019, home to the late Khalil Gibran to whom this musical production pays tribute.
Chief Executive Officer of Broadway Entertainment Group, Liz Koops said: “We are thrilled to bring the first modern Middle Eastern musical performance to Dubai Opera in January 2020. This internationally acclaimed masterpiece is a powerful portrait of immigration, gender relations and identity and we invite audiences to discover more the beautiful story of ‘BROKEN WINGS’.”
The events of ‘BROKEN WINGS’ highlight key issues of the time, yet the themes and debates raised remain increasingly relevant today, more than a century later; the fight for gender equality, the freedom to love whom we love, tradition versus modernity, wealth versus happiness, immigration and the importance of ‘home’. ”
Dubai Opera spokesperson said: “Bringing the West End musical ‘BROKEN WINGS’ to Dubai for the first time aims to create a bridge between the East and West by blending the Middle Eastern story with a Western art form. It is also set to bring cultures together and unite people through music and art. This theatrical insight into Khalil Gibran’s early life transports us back two decades and across continents, to turn-of-the-century Beirut”.
