Calling all budding furniture and household design superstars – JYSK wants you!

The Danish retail chain JYSK is on the look out for aspiring designers to create the next must-have statement piece every home in Dubai can’t be without. And win AED 10,000 in the process.

JYSK, pronounced ‘yusk’, has launched a new competition to give aspiring designers the opportunity to have one of their creations made and sold in its stores.

As part of the contest, students enrolled on design courses at universities in Dubai as well as amateur designers are invited to submit their ideas for a new, unique and inspiring item of household furniture.

The piece must be in the classic JYSK-style and in keeping with the international brand’s quality and overall ethos – think the perfect blend of Scandinavia cool that seamlessly merges function, form and sleek design.

In homage to the region’s unique style, creative history and traditions, the designs must also incorporate Arabic elements into its overall look.

A panel of expert judges from JYSK will cast their eyes over the entries to decide which meet the strict criteria before choosing a winner.

The winning designer will not only receive AED 10,000, they will also see their piece made and sold in JYSK’s UAE stores in time for Ramadan 2019. All of the proceeds from each item sold will be donated to a local charity.

The contest is a wonderful opportunity for young designers studying at university or practicing at home to have their skills and creativity recognised by one of the industry’s biggest brands and will act as a massive boost to their new careers.

CEO Jens Ravnbøl from JYSK said: “Dubai is known the world over for its amazing designs, incredible architecture and stunning homes so we felt it would be the perfect place to look for the next breakout designer to create fantastic furniture and must-have household items.

“This competition will hopefully shine the spotlight on the fantastic design talent that is enrolled in Dubai’s universities and the aspiring designers working at home in their spare time.

“Being able to see your creation on sale in a store is every designer’s dream, and JYSK is delighted to be able to make that dream come true for one talented individual.”

The competition will officially launch on January 20th, with designers having until the end of February to submit their ideas to judges. The winner will be announced in March, and their design will be produced and ready to be sold in JYSK’s stores in May.

How to enter:

  • Submit your design in email format to JYSK’s internal team by 1st March 2019 on elzein@mercuriusint.com.
  • The subject line to read ‘JYSK Design Competition- ENTRY by (add entrants name)
  • Any questions or queries to be addressed to the above email
  • Submission deadline is 1st March
  • The winner will be announced on 10th March and awarded AED 10,000
  • The chosen entry will have their product made and sold in stores by mid-May

JYSK operates 2,000 stores in Europe, with over 500 more in locations in North America and Asia.

The brand’s move into Canada proved a big hit with consumers, with JYSK opening 59 stores throughout the country. The group has also started to penetrate the Asian market and has branches in China and Vietnam.
